Xabi Alonso's side were aiming to win the German Cup for the second year in a row and were the favourites to reach the final when they took on their lower league opposition.

The German champions got off to a solid start when Jonathan Tah opened the scoring after 17 minutes, but the home team were level just three minutes later and took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Leverkusen were unable to create any clear chances in the second half and instead it was Bielefeld who came close to making it 3-1 as Joel Grodowski was unable to find the net. After the full-time whistle, home fans stormed the pitch.

Leverkusen are set to end the season without a trophy, having already been knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich. They are also six points behind Vincent Kompany's men in the Bundesliga.
